random things might break

getting back to linux

for various reasons, i have to use windows for work. w11 becoming cringier every day, i thought about a while about formatting my hard drive and setting up a fedora/w11 dual boot.

thanks to the holiday season, I was finally able to do so and am super happy ever since.

hardware-wise first, my tongfang laptop's fans would always randomly start spinning airbus a380 style, even when doing nothing special, and are now super quiet under fedora. this might seem like a detail but before, it would always feel clunky and bloated just to turn on the thing. it still feels less gracile and and elegant than a macbook air, but now it does not feel like i'm turning on an airplane engine when I just want to read something.

what strikes me the most is how surprised I am to realize I actually own my laptop. i don't have random bloated features I have never asked for randomly popping up, the computer just does what I want, and not what some big bucks corp thinks I want or want me to want.

now I have not used linux for more or less 13 years, there are lots of things I'll have to re-learn, especially after having used windows ~daily for more than 20 years. but it definitely feels like the right thing to do.

maybe more on that later.
